Today, I’m going to share my experience at Filoli Gardens, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Woodside, California.
Filoli’s name is derived from its original owner, William Bourn’s credo: “Fight for a just cause; Love your fellow man; Live a good life.”

Is Filoli Worth Visiting?
Yes, and it is worth being specific about why, because Filoli is not one attraction but three, and most visitors only see one of them.
There is the Historic House, a 1917 Georgian Revival interior kept as a period piece. There is the formal garden, 16 acres of English Renaissance design laid out in garden rooms. And there are the natural lands, more than 650 acres of redwoods and trails that most day visitors never walk into at all.
If you come for an hour, take photographs of the garden and leave, you will have seen the postcard and missed the estate. Give it three to four hours and walk out to the redwoods, and it stops being a garden visit and becomes a day.
A Glimpse into History: Filoli’s Rich Legacy

The estate’s legacy is as grand as its architecture. Let’s delve into a brief history of Filoli.
Brief History of Filoli

Filoli, built between 1915 and 1917, was the residence of William Bowers Bourn II, owner of one of California’s richest gold mines, a prominent San Francisco businessman, and his wife, Agnes.
The estate, designed by Willis Polk and inspired by the Georgian style, spans 654 acres, including 16 acres of formal gardens.
Interesting Facts about the Historic House and Its Significance

- One of the most fascinating aspects of Filoli’s history is its connection to the California Gold Rush. William Bourn II’s wealth was largely derived from the Empire Mine, one of the state’s richest gold mines.
- The estate features an extensive collection of art, antiques, and historical artifacts.
- After Bourn’s death, the Roth family purchased Filoli in 1937 and maintained its grandeur.
- Filoli has been featured in several films and TV shows, most notably as the Carrington mansion in the 1980s TV series “Dynasty.”
Filoli stands as a testament to early 20th-century luxury and California’s rich history, offering visitors a glimpse into the opulence and elegance of a bygone era.

Exploring the Gardens: A Visual Feast

As I stepped into the gardens, I felt like I was entering a living work of art.
Filoli’s gardens are a masterpiece of horticultural artistry, a symphony of colors, textures, and scents that change with the seasons. The sheer scale and meticulous design took my breath away.
The Pool Lawn: A Tranquil Oasis

Upon arriving at Filoli, my first stop was the Pool Lawn, a serene and picturesque area that immediately captivated me.
The tranquil setting, complete with comfortable seating areas, invites visitors to unwind and soak in the beauty of their surroundings.
The Pool Pavilion Lawn: A Peaceful Retreat

Adjacent to the Pool Lawn lies the Pool Pavilion Lawn, a secluded sanctuary where I found a peaceful retreat under the canopy of a magnificent tree with emerald green leaves leaves.
This towering tree provided welcome shade from the sun, and its leaves rustled softly in the breeze, creating a soothing ambiance.
This intimate space became a haven of joy for my family, etching a special place in our hearts.
As we stepped onto the lawn, my 2-year-old son’s eyes lit up with pure delight. The sight of a bright and beautiful tree sparked an instant connection, and he eagerly reached for its leaves, his giggles filling the air.

The lawn transformed into his personal playground, a space where he could freely explore and revel in the wonders of nature.

Meanwhile, my daughter, adorned in a beautiful purple gown, transformed the lawn into her runway.
She gracefully strolled along the manicured grass, striking poses with a radiant smile for her camera-obsessed (or perhaps memory-obsessed) mother.

Each click of the camera captured not just a moment but the essence of her joy and carefree spirit.
Amidst the laughter and playfulness, my husband, Siddhartha, found solace in the tranquility of the Pool Pavilion Lawn. Lulled to sleep by the gentle rustling of leaves and the soothing sounds of nature, he rested peacefully beneath the tree’s protective canopy.
As a mother, witnessing the unbridled joy and contentment of my family in this natural setting was truly heartwarming.
The Pool Pavilion Lawn became more than just a scenic spot; it transformed into a cherished memory, a testament to the power of nature to nurture and unite families.
The experience was both soothing and invigorating, reminding me of the simple joys of life and the importance of creating lasting memories with loved ones.
The Walled Garden: A Secret Paradise

The Walled Garden, roughly an acre in size and enclosed within 10-foot-high brick walls, felt like a secret paradise.
Clipped hedges separated it into many smaller, ornamental garden rooms, each intended to be enjoyed as an individual experience.
I especially loved the lotus pond, which brought back many childhood memories from India.
An Orchard’s Bounty and a Rose Garden’s Embrace: A Sensory Delight

Leaving the walled oasis behind, I wandered into the Garden Orchard and Rose Garden, a space that radiated both tranquility and vibrant life.
The orchard, a symphony of green, was filled with rows upon rows of pear trees laden with ripening fruit. The sight of the heavy pears, their skin glowing with a warm golden hue, was a feast for the eyes.
The sweet scent of the ripening fruit filled the air, mingling with the earthy fragrance of the soil. I couldn’t resist reaching out to gently touch a pear, marveling at its smooth skin and imagining its juicy sweetness.

The Knot Garden: A Whimsical Tapestry of Color and Joy

I absolutely loved the colorful Knot Garden at Filoli. It’s almost magical in its design and vibrancy. The intricate patterns created by the meticulously maintained hedges and vibrant flowers are a visual delight.
No matter how one’s mood is, this place will quickly bring a smile. Walking through this enchanting garden, I felt a sense of joy and wonder.
The harmonious blend of colors and the garden’s symmetrical elegance make it a perfect spot to lift your spirits and appreciate the artistry of nature.

Descending a set of stone steps, I found myself in the enchanting Sunken Garden, a hidden oasis tucked away from the rest of the estate.
The change in elevation created a sense of intimacy as if I had stumbled upon a secret world known only to a select few.
A small stream trickled through the center of the garden, its gentle murmur adding to the tranquil atmosphere. The air was cool and damp, a refreshing contrast to the warm sunshine above.

The Sunken Garden was a place of quiet contemplation, a sanctuary where I could escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

As I sat there, surrounded by nature’s beauty, a sense of peace and tranquility washed over me. It was a moment of pure bliss.
Filoli Historic House

Stepping into Filoli’s historic house felt like embarking on a journey back in time. Built between 1915 and 1917, this Georgian Revival mansion exudes elegance and grandeur.

As I wandered through its opulent rooms adorned with ornate woodwork, marble fireplaces, and exquisite furnishings, I was transported to an era of refined luxury.
It reminded me of Chaplin’s House in Switzerland. Each room tells a story of the estate’s rich history, and as I wandered through them, I felt like I was stepping into the pages of a historical novel.

The house is not just a museum but a living testament to early 20th-century opulence and California’s storied past.
Each room held a story, each object a memory. It was a journey back in time, a glimpse into the lives of those who had come before, and a reminder of the enduring power of beauty and craftsmanship.

Rose Wonders: The Thomas Dambo Troll in the Filoli Redwoods
If you have visited Filoli before and think you have seen it, there is now a reason to go back. Rose Wonders, a 27-foot troll built by the Danish artist Thomas Dambo, has a permanent home in Filoli’s redwoods, and she is the largest troll he has ever made.
Rose was born at Burning Man and built entirely from reclaimed materials, which is Dambo’s signature. More than 600 donors brought her to Filoli. If you have followed his trolls elsewhere in the world, this is number one of 172 on the trollmap and the only one on the San Francisco Peninsula.
She sits along the California Trail, next to Thistlewyck Village and the Nature Playspace. Plan on a 10 to 20 minute walk each way on an unpaved but stroller-friendly path. Seeing her is included with general admission, so there is no separate ticket.
Children can climb through her cascading hair and stand in her open hand, which makes this the single most reliable way to get a reluctant child excited about a day at a historic garden.
Best Time to Visit Filoli, Season by Season
Filoli is open year round, and the honest answer to “when should I go” is that it depends entirely on what you want to see. The estate looks like a different place in March than it does in October.
Spring: the busiest and the showiest
Spring is when the formal garden does what it was designed to do. Bulbs, blossom and the cottage garden beds all come in, and it is the season most people picture when they picture Filoli.
It is also the most crowded, so book a morning slot and go on a weekday if you can.
Summer: roses, long light and quieter mornings
The rose garden peaks in early summer, and the long evenings make the 16 acres of formal garden feel generous rather than rushed. Summer is also the easiest season for the redwoods and the trails, since the walk out to Rose Wonders is more pleasant when the ground is dry.
Summer is also when Filoli hosts Summer Nights, on Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 5pm to 8pm, June through early September.
You wander the garden as the sun goes down, with live acoustic music on the lawn, food trucks and Filoli’s Garden Pops. The trail out to Rose Wonders stays open, so you can hike at twilight! Kids are $10 and members pay a reduced rate, and it is a separate ticket from general admission.
Fall: color, Autumn Days and Nightfall
Autumn brings color to the estate and two events that change the character of a visit entirely. Autumn Days runs during the day, and Nightfall transforms the whole estate after dark. If you only visit once a year, fall gives you the most to work with.
Winter: the house at its best
Winter is the season to come for the Historic House rather than the garden. Holidays at Filoli decorates the 1917 Georgian Revival interiors, and the bare structure of the formal garden, the yew hedges and the garden rooms, is easier to read without the planting.
Seasonal Events at Filoli
Three events are worth planning around, and all of them need tickets separate from general admission.
- Nightfall runs 26 September to 1 November 2026, closed 8 October. The estate opens after dark from 5:30pm to 10pm, with last entry at 8:30pm. Most people spend two to two and a half hours walking it, and parking is free.
- Autumn Days is the daytime autumn programming, running through the fall season.
- Holidays at Filoli decorates the Historic House for the winter season. Membership now includes daytime admission during Holidays, which it did not in previous years.
Planning Your Visit to Filoli
Hours and tickets
Filoli is open daily, with admission from 10am to 5pm. The trails close 30 minutes early so guests can get back before the estate closes. Book in advance even as a member, because weekends, holidays and spring can sell out, and check in during your one-hour window. General admission tickets can be rescheduled for a $10 fee; special event tickets cannot be rescheduled or refunded.
Filoli is open rain or shine, and there are no weather refunds. If you hold a SNAP EBT card, Filoli takes part in Museums for All and offers four free admission tickets. Library card holders can also reserve free passes through Discover and Go.
Getting there and parking
Filoli is at 86 Cañada Road in Woodside, about 30 minutes from both San Francisco and San Jose. From Mountain View or Palo Alto it is a straightforward 20 to 30 minutes up Interstate 280, which is one of the more scenic commutes in the Bay Area.
Parking is free and included with your ticket. Staff direct you to one of several lots on arrival, and on busy days you may be sent to a lot that gives easier access to the redwoods rather than the house. Accessible parking is near the Quail Café, which is also the rideshare pickup point. All lots close 30 minutes after the estate does.
How long do you need at Filoli?
Allow three to four hours to do the House, the formal garden and the walk out to Rose Wonders without rushing. If you only want the garden and the house, two hours is enough. If you plan to walk the trails through the natural lands, give yourself most of a day.
Filoli with kids
Better than it sounds for a historic estate. The Nature Playspace and Rose Wonders in the redwoods give children something to do that is entirely theirs, and the walk out there is stroller-friendly. Note that wagons and stroller wagons are not allowed anywhere on the estate, so bring a normal stroller or a carrier.
Food, photography and what to leave at home
Food and drink, including beer, wine and cocktails, are sold at several places across the estate. You cannot picnic in the gardens or on the grounds, though there are picnic benches near the main entrance, and outside alcohol is not permitted.
For photographers, this is the detail worth knowing: tripods, monopods and selfie sticks are all welcome in the gardens and natural lands, which is unusual and makes Filoli a rare Bay Area garden where you can work properly. Standalone flashes, reflectors and other props are not allowed, and neither are drones. Pets are not permitted, though service animals are welcome.
