During my recent road trip to Palm Springs from the Bay Area with my family, we followed a family-friendly Palm Springs itinerary and discovered Sunnylands Center & Gardens, a hidden gem that quickly became one of the highlights of our vacation.
My children especially loved exploring the green maze and strolling through the cactus-filled gardens, where every path felt like an adventure.

A Glimpse into History: The Legacy of Sunnylands and Its Global Importance

The Sunnylands Center & Gardens is part of the historic estate of Walter and Leonore Annenberg, renowned philanthropists who created a haven for U.S. Presidents, foreign dignitaries, and international leaders.
It has earned the nickname “Camp David of the West” for hosting high-level retreats and meaningful discussions on diplomacy.
This 15-acre center offers stunning mid-century modern architecture by architect Frederick Fisher.
It is surrounded by meticulously landscaped gardens created by The Office of James Burnett, with horticultural consultation from Mary Irish.
Inspired by the Annenbergs’ collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings—now housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art—the gardens reflect the couple’s deep appreciation for art.
The gardens, open Wednesday through Sunday, feature over 70 species of native and arid-adapted plants from North and South America, Africa, and the Mediterranean that truly highlight the beauty of the California desert.
My children had a fantastic time exploring the golden barrel cacti, palo verde trees, and enjoying the serene pathways.
There’s something about the striking landscape that immediately transports you into a tranquil state of mind.
Sunnylands Gardens made my kids feel like adventurers as they weaved in and out of the labyrinthine rows of plants.
Sunnylands Center & Architectural Highlights

The Sunnylands Center, open Wednesday through Sunday, invites visitors to dive deeper into the estate’s rich history.
This is more than just a visitor center—it offers interactive exhibits, audio tours, and a documentary film highlighting Sunnylands’ role in global diplomacy.
My family and I relished the tranquility of the visitor center, its bright, airy space enveloping us like a refreshing oasis in the desert heat.

I particularly enjoyed the ongoing exhibition – Variations to a Theme: William Haines at Sunnylands, offering a fascinating look into the estate’s interior design.
The center also features a gift shop filled with unique keepsakes and a cozy café—perfect for parents to take a break while kids explore the surrounding gardens.

One of the highlights was sitting by the reflecting pool with views of the San Jacinto Mountains in the distance, creating the perfect backdrop for family photos.

My children were amazed when we told them about the history of this place—that world leaders had walked where they were now running around.
Sharing stories with our children about the international leaders who had walked these grounds gave the visit a special significance.
Although we couldn’t access the historic residence itself, as it is available only through guided house tours on specific dates, it felt special to simply be on the grounds.
Tip: For those interested in guided tours of the historic estate, tickets are released on the 15th of each month at 9 am PST for the following month’s tours. These tend to sell out quickly, so planning ahead is crucial.
Variations to a Theme: An Exhibition on the Visionary Designs of William Haines at Sunnylands

During our visit, we explored the exhibition Variations to a Theme: William Haines at Sunnylands.
The exhibit beautifully captured the innovative spirit of Haines, whose visionary designs played a pivotal role in shaping the estate’s interior aesthetics.

It offered a fascinating glimpse into his creative process, showcasing how he combined modern sophistication with historical elements to create timeless spaces.

The exhibition made us appreciate the thought and vision that went into designing Sunnylands, adding another layer of meaning to our visit.
The Gardens at Sunnylands

The nine-acre gardens at Sunnylands are a testament to the thoughtful blending of natural beauty and intentional design.

Featuring over 70 species of native and arid-adapted plants, the gardens showcase flora from North and South America, Africa, and the Mediterranean.

Inspired by the Annenbergs’ love for art, the gardens echo the colors and textures of their beloved Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings.

As we wandered through the gardens, we encountered golden barrel cacti, palo verde trees, and vibrant drought-tolerant blooms.

Each turn on the winding paths became an adventure for our children, making the gardens both a fun and educational experience.
This tranquil setting invited moments of mindfulness, offering a peaceful escape from the fast pace of travel and connecting us with the natural world.
