History of the Butterfly House: The Genesis of a Fluttering Dream

In 1977, when Sonja and J Jackson first made their home at 309 9th Avenue, little did they know that their modest abode would metamorphose into a local landmark.

As Sonja’s eyesight began to fade due to a genetic condition, J, in an act of profound devotion, crafted a singular gift that would alter the course of their lives.

With deft hands and a heart full of love, J carved a wooden butterfly, adorning it with mirrors and painting it in hues so vivid that pierced through the encroaching darkness of Sonja’s vision.

This first butterfly, attached to the front of their house, had two important roles: it helped Sonja find her way home from her daily walks along the shore with her guide dog, and it sparked a 25-year journey of artistic creation.

A Canvas of Unconditional Love

For the next 25 years, J Jackson devoted himself to an extraordinary labor of love.

The Butterfly House slowly unfurled its wings, each new addition a brushstroke in a grand masterpiece dedicated to his beloved Sonja.

What began as a single carved butterfly burgeoned into a mesmerizing tapestry of winged wonders, transforming their residence into one of the Monterey Peninsula’s most captivating attractions.

The house became a living, breathing entity—a riot of colors and forms that defied convention and celebrated the unbound potential of human creativity.

Each butterfly, meticulously crafted and placed, whispered tales of devotion, resilience, and the triumph of beauty over the encroaching darkness of Sonja’s world.

Every inch of the house was adorned with butterflies, from the vibrant mural on the walls to the intricate sculptures attached to the facade.

Each butterfly, carved by hand and meticulously painted, had its personality. The walls were lined with these delicate creatures, creating an almost magical sensation as you walked past.

My daughter was particularly mesmerized by the bright hues and reflective mirrors embedded in the butterflies.

As we stood before the pink butterfly wall, it seemed to cast a spell on her. Inspired by the whimsical beauty surrounding us and caught up in the holiday spirit, she spontaneously began to sing “Feliz Navidad.”

Her sweet voice, perfectly complementing the magical backdrop, created a moment too precious not to capture.

As I recorded her impromptu performance, my 2-month-old son nestled contentedly in his stroller beside his sister, absorbing the colorful world around him.

The pink butterfly wall had become more than just a beautiful piece of art; it had transformed into the stage for one of our most cherished family memories, blending the magic of the house with the magic of our holiday adventure.

The Rosa Parks Tribute

One of the most touching and unexpected aspects of the Butterfly House was the tribute to Rosa Parks. Nestled among the colorful decor, there was a dedicated butterfly in her honor.

This butterfly, painted with dots of bright pink, green, and white, displayed the words “You Go Girl” and reflected the resilience and empowerment that defined her legacy.

It was a beautiful reminder that this house wasn’t just a work of art, but a canvas of personal and historical tributes.

Seeing this butterfly brought me back to my visit to the Lynching Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama, where I had stood in awe before the powerful sculpture of Rosa Parks.

Both pieces, though different in form, served as poignant tributes to her unyielding strength and enduring legacy.
