As a Bengali from Kolkata now living in the Bay Area, Durga Puja is so much more than just a festival to me—it’s a homecoming of the heart.
Every autumn, when the sweet fragrance of shiuli flowers should be filling the air and the sound of dhak should be echoing through the narrow lanes of my childhood, I find myself thousands of miles away in California.
But here’s the beautiful thing about our community: we’ve recreated that magic, that sense of belonging, right here in the Bay Area.
The five days of Durga Puja represent the annual visit of Goddess Durga to her maternal home, and for those of us living far from Bengal, these celebrations become our own homecoming.
Each pandal, each community gathering, transforms into a little piece of Kolkata—complete with the familiar chaos of organizing committees, the last-minute rushes, the endless debates over cultural programs, and of course, the incredible sense of unity that emerges when we come together to celebrate our shared heritage.
About Durga Puja
Durga Puja is the most significant festival for Bengalis from West Bengal in eastern India.
This autumn celebration honors Goddess Durga’s victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.
But beyond its mythological significance, Durga Puja is a time for family reunions, community bonding, cultural performances, and elaborate feasts.
For five days, communities transform into vibrant celebrations filled with traditional music, dance, delicious Bengali cuisine, and the centerpiece—beautifully crafted clay idols of the ten-armed goddess.
Bay Area Durga Puja Celebrations 2026
This fall, our Bay Area Bengali community continues the tradition with several organizations hosting their own unique celebrations. Each brings its own flavor while maintaining the core spirit of the festival:
Fremont Hindu Temple (Vedic Dharma Samaj)
Dates: To be announced – the temple traditionally observes the full timeline, Mahalaya (October 10) through Vijaya Dashami (October 21), 2026
Venue: 3676 Delaware Dr, Fremont
One of the longest-running Durga Puja celebrations in the Bay Area, Vedic Dharma Samaj has been serving the Hindu community for decades.
Their celebration spans the traditional timeline, offering devotees the full experience of the festival with daily arati, cultural programs, and community meals.
The temple’s established presence makes it a cornerstone of Bay Area Hindu celebrations.
Prothoma
Dates: To be announced for 2026 (Mahalaya: October 10)
Venue: HUSD Performing Arts Center, 2390 Panama St, Hayward
Prothoma focuses on preserving and presenting Bengali cultural traditions through their celebration.
Known for their high-quality cultural programs and attention to traditional rituals, they create an authentic Bengali atmosphere that resonates with both first-generation immigrants and their children.
Pashchimi
Dates: October 16–20, 2026 (Shashthi to Dashami)
Venue: Oasis Palace, 35145 Newark Blvd, Newark
Pashchimi brings together the Bengali community of the West Bay with enthusiasm and traditional fervor.
Their celebration emphasizes community participation and creates a welcoming environment for families to experience the joy of Durga Puja together.
BayBASI (Bay Area Bengali Association)
Dates: October 16–18, 2026
Venue: Foster City
As one of the prominent Bengali associations in the Bay Area, BayBASI organizes a celebration that beautifully balances tradition with modern presentation.
Their events are known for engaging cultural programs and strong community participation.
Agomoni (San Ramon)
Dates: October 16–18, 2026
Venue: City Center Bishop Ranch, 2700 Camino Ramon, San Ramon
Serving the East Bay Bengali community, Agomoni creates a family-friendly celebration that welcomes everyone to experience the joy of Durga Puja.
Their location in San Ramon makes Bengali culture accessible to the broader East Bay community.
POORBA (Mountain House)
Dates: October 16–18, 2026
Venue: Central Park, Mountain House
POORBA brings a unique outdoor celebration experience, hosting their Durga Puja in the beautiful setting of Central Park.
This newer addition to the Bay Area Durga Puja landscape offers a fresh perspective while maintaining traditional values.
Bay Area Prabasi
Dates: October 16–18, 2026
Venue: Santa Clara County Fairgrounds, 344 Tully Rd, San Jose
Concluding the season of celebrations, Bay Area Prabasi hosts one of the larger gatherings, taking advantage of the spacious fairgrounds to accommodate the community.
Their celebration often features elaborate decorations and extensive cultural programming.
