This winter, we finally answered that call, setting off on an unforgettable 11-day journey through some of the most iconic destinations the Southwest has to offer – a time when snow occasionally dusts the red rocks and crowds thin, revealing these majestic landscapes in their most serene state.
From the electric energy of Las Vegas to the serene canyons of Zion and Bryce, from the awe-inspiring spires of Monument Valley to the immense grandeur of the Grand Canyon, and from the mystical red rocks of Sedona to the bustling cityscape of Phoenix, every moment was a story waiting to be told.
Let me take you along our path, sharing the main itinerary and the highlights that made this Southwest adventure one for the books.

Our adventure began with a late afternoon arrival in Las Vegas from San Francisco. After checking into Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, we watched our kids’ eyes light up with the same brilliance as the city’s famous neon skyline.
That evening, we took a leisurely stroll along the Strip, timing our walk perfectly to catch the iconic Bellagio fountains dancing under the starry sky.
From there, we wandered to The LINQ Promenade, where a towering Christmas tree and colorful fountains added unexpected holiday charm to the desert city.
The High Roller Observation Wheel towered above us, its massive illuminated ring creating a perfect backdrop for our evening walk.
The highlight for our children was discovering I Love Sugar, the world’s largest candy store spanning 14,000 square feet – a sweet ending to our first night in this dazzling city.
Fueled by Vegas’s electric energy, we were eager to explore more of its wonders the next day.

Day 2: Exploring the Sights and Sounds of Las Vegas
We dedicated our second day to discovering Las Vegas’s most iconic attractions at a relaxed pace.
The morning began with a visit to the Conservatory & Botanical Gardens at Bellagio, where elaborate winter-themed displays transformed the space into a holiday wonderland.
The kids were mesmerized by the meticulous attention to detail in each festive exhibit.
The adventure continued at the Shark Reef Aquarium in Mandalay Bay and as the evening approached, we embarked on a tour of the Strip’s most famous themed hotels.
At The Venetian, we strolled along canals reminiscent of Venice, complete with gondolas gliding beneath bridges.
Our final stop was Caesars Palace, where we wandered through the Forum Shops, taking in the grandeur of ancient Rome reimagined in the heart of the desert.
Each unique hotel experience offered its own theatrical take on far-off places, creating a whirlwind world tour without ever leaving Las Vegas Boulevard.
Where we stayed in Las Vegas
We chose Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, which is perfectly positioned at the heart of the action, making it easy to explore nearby attractions on foot.
Day 3: Journey to Kanab, Utah
Leaving behind the glittering lights of Las Vegas, we started our true Southwest adventure. After an early lunch, our first stop was Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada’s oldest and largest state park, where ancient red sandstone formations created a stark contrast against the winter sky.
The park’s name became immediately apparent as the afternoon sunlight illuminated the red rocks, making them appear to glow with an inner fire.
As dusk approached, we continued our journey into Utah, where holiday lights twinkled in small towns along our route.
Before reaching our final destination, we passed the Lost City Museum in Overton, a hidden gem that preserves the archaeological heritage of ancient Native American cultures.
Late evening found us in Kanab, Utah, a charming town known as “Little Hollywood” for its history of Western film productions and its proximity to several national parks.
This would be our base for exploring the magnificent landscapes that awaited us in the days ahead.
Travel Tip: Consider visiting the Lost City Museum in Overton to learn about the region’s fascinating Native American history. It’s an enriching stop that adds cultural context to the natural wonders you’ll encounter.
Where we stayed in Kanab
We chose Comfort Suites Kanab National Park Area for its central location, providing easy access to multiple national parks and local attractions.
The spacious, clean rooms, friendly staff, and complimentary hot breakfast made our stay comfortable and enjoyable.
Day 4: Zion National Park Adventure
In the early morning, after breakfast, we set off from Kanab towards Zion National Park.
Taking the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel – East Entrance, we drove along the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, marveling at breathtaking views of the dramatic red cliffs and rugged landscape that unfolded before us.
The famous Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway is a super scenic drive, with the tunnel itself spanning a full mile and revealing incredible vistas of Zion National Park on the other side.
Upon arriving at the visitor center, we hopped onto the shuttle, which took us through the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive to the Temple of Sinawava.
Here, we began the Riverside Walk, a relatively easy and scenic hike that runs alongside the Virgin River. The roundtrip hike is just under two miles, and we took about two hours to enjoy the stunning scenery.
The towering canyon walls and the sound of the flowing river made for an unforgettable start to our Zion exploration.
Day 5: Bryce Canyon’s Stunning Hoodoos
We were now five days into our journey, with each day bringing exhilarating new experiences. On Day 5, December 24th, we loved having breakfast by a beautiful Christmas tree in our hotel.
The festive ambiance, filled with the joy of the season, added a wonderful start to our day. After breakfast, we started our journey from Kanab to Bryce Canyon National Park.
The drive itself was a treat, with sweeping views of the wintry landscape. It was very cold that day, and although I had visited Bryce Canyon before, this was the first time seeing it blanketed in snow.
The gorgeous landscape was transformed, with the hoodoos—those otherworldly, spire-shaped rock formations—standing out even more vividly against the fresh snow.
Day 6: Scenic Drive from Kanab to Monument Valley
We checked out of our hotel in Kanab after breakfast and set our sights on Monument Valley, eager for another day of exploration.
Our journey took us through some stunning Southwestern scenery, with planned stops along the way.
We paused at Wahweap Scenic Overlook in Page, taking in the expansive views over Lake Powell, and then continued to the Glen Canyon Dam Overlook, where we marveled at the impressive engineering and the beauty of the Colorado River below.
We reached Monument Valley very late at night, and freezing temperatures greeted us as we arrived. After checking into The View Hotel, we couldn’t help but feel the anticipation for the morning.
Despite our fatigue, we were thrilled to witness the famous Monument Valley sunrise, and it did not disappoint.
The first light of day illuminating the incredible buttes was truly magical, a memory that will stay with us forever.

We chose The View Hotel at Monument Valley for its unparalleled location within the Navajo Tribal Park, offering private balconies with breathtaking views of the iconic Mittens formations.
The hotel’s authentic Navajo décor and proximity to the park’s attractions provided an immersive and memorable experience.
Day 7: Sunrise at Monument Valley and Drive to the Grand Canyon
I remember waking up around 4 a.m., and despite the freezing cold, I stepped out onto our patio to witness the famous West Mitten in Monument Valley.
Words cannot truly capture the awe I felt seeing those iconic rock formations standing silently against the early morning sky.
Slowly, as the first rays of the sun began to illuminate the valley, the landscape came alive in hues of orange and red.
It was a surreal moment that filled me with appreciation for the natural beauty around us.
I grabbed my camera, put on my gloves, jacket, stole, and woolen cap, and made my way to the main deck where many others had gathered to witness the astonishing sunrise.
My husband stayed inside with the kids, and they watched the magical scene unfold from the warmth of our room before joining me for breakfast a little later.
It was December 25th, and the festive spirit made the morning even more special.
Later, we spent time exploring Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, immersing ourselves in the beauty of this sacred landscape.
After a morning full of adventure, we returned to our hotel before lunch, checked out, and set off for the Grand Canyon, ready for the next chapter of our journey.
Day 8: Grand Canyon Exploration and Drive to Sedona
We checked in at our hotel late at night, which meant our morning adventure at the Grand Canyon’s South Rim started a little later than planned.
Our first stop was Mather Point, where we took in the vast expanse of the canyon and let its grandeur wash over us.
Next, we visited the Yavapai Museum of Geology, which provided fascinating insights into the formation of this magnificent landscape.
We soaked in the scenery as much as possible, savoring every sweeping vista, and as the evening settled in, we experienced something truly magical—the moonrise over the Grand Canyon.
Though I had seen a few sunsets here before, this was my first time witnessing a moonrise, and it left me speechless.
The moon rising over the canyon’s jagged edges was a sight to behold, a memory I will cherish forever.
As the day ended, we set off for Sedona, stopping for dinner at Sunnyside in Flagstaff.
The warmth of the meal and the cozy atmosphere provided a perfect break before continuing our journey to Sedona, where we arrived late at night, ready to rest before our next adventure.
Where we stayed in the Grand Canyon
We chose the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Grand Canyon in Tusayan for its prime location, just a mile from the South Rim entrance, providing easy access to the park’s breathtaking vistas.
Day 9: Discovering Sedona’s Beauty
We started exploring Sedona the next day, eager to discover the magic of this stunning area.
Our first stop was the beautiful Chapel of the Holy Cross, an architectural marvel built right into the red rocks, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
Next, we took a scenic drive and admired the beauty of Bell Rock, a striking formation known for its vibrant red color and unique shape.
We also ventured onto a few easy trails, letting the serene natural surroundings envelop us as we took in the distinct beauty of Sedona’s red rock country.
Day 10: Sedona Exploration and Drive to Phoenix
We checked out of our hotel and started our day with a visit to Amitabha Stupa and Peace Park.
The tranquility of the park, set against the backdrop of Sedona’s red rock formations, offered a peaceful start to our morning.
Next, we made our way to Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village, where we explored the charming shops, admired the sculptures, and soaked in the festive Christmas decor.
It was a delightful way to spend our last hours in Sedona. After lunch, we set off for Phoenix, ready to conclude our journey through the stunning Southwest.
Where we stayed in Sedona
We chose Sedona Pines Resort for its tranquil setting just outside Sedona, offering individual cottages with full kitchens and private decks.
The resort’s amenities, including a heated outdoor pool, multiple hot tubs, and an on-site Italian restaurant, provided a comfortable and enjoyable stay.
Day 11: Departure from Phoenix
From Phoenix, we took our early morning flight to San Francisco.
We loved our breakfast at the airport; amidst the busyness and crowd, the smell of coffee and freshly baked bread gave us a comforting and fulfilling feeling.
We boarded our flight, and as we flew home, I spent my time revisiting the photographs of our journey—each one evoking warm memories from the past 10 days.
So many incredible experiences, each etched in our hearts, made this trip truly unforgettable.
