Alaska, the land of towering glaciers, breathtaking fjords, and abundant wildlife, had been on our family’s bucket list for years. This summer, we finally made it happen, embarking on an unforgettable 11-day road trip through the heart of the Last Frontier.
From the charming coastal town of Seward to the serene wilderness of Denali National Park and from the majestic glaciers of Valdez to the cultural heritage of Anchorage, unforgettable moments.
If you’re dreaming of your own Alaskan adventure, let me share our itinerary and some of the highlights that made this trip truly extraordinary.

Day 1: Arrival in Anchorage and Scenic Drive to Seward
Our Alaskan adventure began as we landed in Anchorage. After a smooth flight, we were eager to explore! Our first stop was Spenard Roadhouse, an amazing restaurant just a short drive from the airport.
The local cuisine was a perfect introduction to Alaskan flavors. With satisfied appetites, we embarked on a scenic 2-hour road trip to Seward, a charming coastal town that would be our base for exploring Kenai Fjords National Park.
This drive, filled with stunning landscapes and picturesque stops, set the tone for our journey. We checked into our charming hotel in Seward for a three-night stay, excited for the adventures ahead.
Day 2: Exploring Seward and Its Natural Wonders
We kept our second day low-key, starting with some relaxation along the Resurrection River. The Resurrection River was just a stone’s throw away from Windsong Lodge, the hotel we stayed at. The serene environment was perfect for unwinding and appreciating nature’s beauty.
Later, we caught a glimpse of Exit Glacier from the road and visited the Exit Glacier Nature Center, where we learned about the glacier’s history and the surrounding ecosystem.
Our journey continued to Moose Pass and Cooper Landing, where we spent some time by the scenic Kenai Lake before returning to Seward for a restful evening.
Day 3: Kenai Fjords National Park and Seward’s Charms
Day three was a highlight as we embarked on a cruise to Kenai Fjords National Park. The stunning fjords, towering glaciers, and abundant wildlife left us in awe.
After the cruise, we explored the Iditarod Trail Centennial Statue and Seward Waterfront Park, soaking in the local culture and history.
We ended the day with a delicious meal in downtown Seward, a stroll along the harbor, and a visit to Lowell Creek Waterfall.
Day 4: Journey to Denali

We checked out of our hotel in Seward and began our drive to Denali National Park, home to North America’s tallest peak.
Along the way, we visited the Kenai Mountains-Turnagain Arm National Heritage Area, where the panoramic views were simply breathtaking.
A stop at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center gave us the chance to see some of Alaska’s native animals up close.
After a long but scenic drive, we finally reached Denali at night and checked into our cozy hotel.
Day 5: Discovering Denali National Park

The fifth day started with a relaxing morning exploring Healy and Nenana. Healy offered charming local shops and cafes. In Nenana, we visited historical landmarks and enjoyed the quaint town atmosphere.
We then took a memorable photo at the entrance of Denali National Park before entering the park in the afternoon for a bus tour.

A bus trip deep into the park offered stunning views of the Alaskan wilderness, and we were thrilled to spot grizzly bears, caribou, and Dall sheep along the way.
Day 6: Exploring Denali and Beyond

The next morning, we visited Denali National Park and watched the fascinating Sled Dog Demonstrations.
The Sled Dog Demonstrations were a fun and educational experience, giving us a glimpse into the important role these dogs play in Alaskan life.
Next, we explored the visitor center and enjoyed sandwiches at the park’s restaurant. Afterward, we drove to Denali State Park. On the way, we savored the scenery, especially from Cantwell.
Day 7: From Denali to Glacier View

Our journey continued as we started for Glacier View, home to the picturesque Matanuska Glacier.
On the way, we spent some time at the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge and the quaint town of Talkeetna.
The long drive was worth it when we reached Glacier View after midnight, ready for another day of exploration.
Day 8: Matanuska Glacier and Road Trip to Valdez

Day eight was dedicated to visiting the magnificent Matanuska Glacier. The stunning scenery along the road trip to Valdez was a visual feast.

We took a short break for dinner at Glennallen and reached Valdez around 10:00 PM, exhausted but exhilarated by the day’s adventures.
Day 9: Exploring Valdez and Columbia Glacier Cruise
The morning of day nine was spent exploring Valdez, a beautiful town on the shores of Prince William Sound.
We explored Valdez downtown, where we admired beautiful murals and visited the Valdez Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Later, we explored Valdez Glacier Lake before embarking on a Columbia Glacier cruise in the afternoon.

The cruise, with its close-up views of the massive glacier, the breathtaking sight of calving ice, the playful antics of harbor seals, was a breathtaking experience.
Day 10: Valdez to Palmer

On the tenth day, we started with a leisurely exploration of Valdez’s enchanting waterfront. A visit to the Solomon Gulch Hatchery provided insights into the local fish population.
We then visited the Wrangle St. Elias Visitor Center before heading to Palmer, where we arrived late at night.
Day 11: Final Day in Alaska

Our final day in Alaska began with a visit to the Reindeer Farm in Butte, where we had fun interacting with the friendly reindeer.
Next, we explored the Alaska Native Heritage Center, which offered a deep dive into the state’s rich cultural heritage.

A visit to the Alaska Wild Berry Products shop, with its impressive 20-Foot Chocolate Waterfall, was a sweet treat.
We then headed to the Potter Marsh Bird Sanctuary before finally boarding our late-night flight back to California.
As we boarded our flight back home, we were filled with gratitude for the incredible experiences we had shared as a family.

- Embrace spontaneity: While planning is important, leave room for spontaneity. Some of our favorite moments were unplanned detours and chance encounters.
